If you know somebody that will be driving in from two states away it makes sense to have them pick one up and bring it in.Īfter cleaning machines for several weeks I went back to the stuff that was soaking. It would be worth while to consider a generator just to support faster cleanup, but even Lowes will be out of them for weeks. However, you may want to be a bit more cautious about this since salt water conducts electricity while fresh water is a pretty good insulator. Let them sit for a week and the bearings seize up and they have to go out to the motor re-builder. Machines require manual cleaning and I found that if I could get electric motors running before they dry out they will heat up a bit and that drys them thoroughly. (I don't remember the name but it was like Blaster and Blaster is also good, but it quickly ran out in my area.) I dumped the HF rust stuff into the plastic bins and added all hand tools and bits. (Home Depot may be equally good but ours was underwater.) I was quickly able to buy plastic pans/Mold Treatment/dehumidifies/etc and from Harbor Freight I bought about 5 gallons of some sort of rust treatment. Lowes is pretty impressive when it comes to getting in cleanup supplies. But I did do a couple of things that did seemed to help. I was dealing with clean fresh water and that is probably a much easier problem than salty sea water but even so I am still recovering.
A year ago Sept, Tropical Storm Lee filled my shop with chest deep water. If you have specific problems there is probably someone who can help. If you don't have one, a hammer operated impact driver is very handy for removing tight fasteners.
Take pictures and notes of how things go together and keep parts organized together. Luckily, Atlas parts are among the easiest to find and pay for.
Be patient, even electric motors can sometimes be salvaged from flooding. I always try to sacrifice the cheapest part when something has to give. Try to not damage rare or expensive parts. Plain bearings will generally clean up okay. If you have ball or roller bearings on the spindle they may be beyond saving but it never hurts to try. Also, do not use the backgears to lock the spindle for removing the chuck. I like Kroil or PB Blaster but there are tons of discussions about that on the web. The first advice I can give you is to soak everything in penetrating oil for several days, or as long as you can. I imagine that your machines will be damaged less than those that have been rusting for a long time. I have never experienced a flood, all my machinery developed its rust over long periods of time.
